30 Days, Day One: My Best Friend
As far as I know, this position remains unfilled. And though the Son of God is indeed he who most loves me in this world, as well as he without whom my heart cannot love nor indeed live, I hesitate to apply the term best friend to him.
But say we exclude Jesus from the scope of this term, best friend. There are those I would implicitly bind to myself, not by direct ritual connexion but through...

Oh, my goodness, Angelo in ice cream! – if you haven’t read Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, don’t worry about it.

Spoiler alert.
Another thing: I just realized that even my Twelfth Night paper on the role of Malvolio and his subplot (aside from the addition of laughs from the subplot), the paper I turned in at noon yesterday after an all-nighter, was affected by Inception.
In Paul’s estimation, anyone who thought that the new life through Jesus...

‘Lord, I Lift Your Name on High’: a Stupid Hymn
‘You came from heaven to earth to show the way’, to be an orthodox statement, absolutely cannot mean that the Incarnation of the Son is meant primarily for us to have a perfect moral example to imitate. As it is, I think that line of the song’s within bounds but so banal that it completely trivializes the Incarnation in relation to the Atonement.
‘From the earth to the cross, my debt to pay’ does...

Review of Robert Alter’s Pen of Iron. I get to mine this book for ways both to analyse biblical style in books and to use it in my own writing.
Also see Mark Noll’s review, as well as Alter on his own book.

Because polysemy is obviously too confusing. But I’ve also been annoyed at people’s attempts to be ‘clearer’ than the Bible on baptism. Peter was not afraid to say, The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This song.
Every time I hear it, I think of myself and my past with the female race.
As most of you know I’m the super sensitive type and I think every stupid insignificant detail means something. AKA I’m hella girly, and not hella manly like most guys are, bwahaha.
No, Marc, that doesn’t make you girly. You’re an N, and people just don’t realize that details can hold a great deal of...
Objectivity About Objective Matters
You know what I don’t get? Using ‘in my opinion’ and ‘just my two cents’ (I might name names, but the names are so numerous that naming them would take way too long) to talk about things that are pretty objective and quantifiable. A classic case of pop postmodernism, I think.
I mean, if you wanted to be tentative, why wouldn’t instead say something like ‘my impression is that’ or ‘as far...

Hi, I’m a recent UC Berkeley graduate offering my services for proofreading or copyediting. As my undergraduate major was linguistics, I’m academically familiar with the nature of phrases and sentences. I also have a meticulous eye for ambiguity, as well as for spelling (whichever orthography you consider most fitting); the close attention I give to detail is apparent in my oversight...
